AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Central Texas temperatures will return to the lower to middle 90s today and Monday. Slightly lower temperatures are forecast Tuesday and Wednesday because of more cloud cover and the increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms. The cold front will arrive Thursday morning delivering a north wind by Thursday afternoon and helping to significantly lower temperatures with many highs Friday and Saturday in the upper 70s to low 80s. A southwest flow in the upper atmosphere along with a surface flow from the Gulf will bring in plenty of moisture for the skies to open up with much-needed showers and thunderstorms beginning Tuesday afternoon. The chance of rain will be 40%. They'll be higher Wednesday and Thursday before lowering by Friday and Saturday. October is the 2nd wettest month of the year in Central Texas with 3.91". The European model is suggesting that at least 1.50" could be measured between Tuesday afternoon and Saturday evening. That's the more aggressive for...Alex Kingsbury: Trump’s promise of lawlessness
Published Mon, 25 Nov 2024 07:02:45 GMT
Although it was lost in the four-year cyclone that was the presidency of Donald Trump, one of his most immoral acts was to pardon soldiers who were accused of committing war crimes by killing unarmed civilians or prisoners. Military leaders, including his own defense secretary and the secretary of the Army, objected, saying it would undermine good order and discipline. Lawlessness can easily beget lawlessness. But the American system is ill-prepared to deter leaders bent on undermining the rule of law. Checks and balances spread powers across the government, but that isn’t enough to temper or stop bad-faith actors looking to subvert the law. According to a new article in The Atlantic, Gen. Mark Milley, upon becoming the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 2019, “found himself in a disconcerting situation: trying, and failing, to teach President Trump the difference between appropriate battlefield aggressiveness on the one hand, and war crimes on the other.”Trump, as Milley discover...Twin Cities Marathon, 10-mile race canceled due to heat that won’t allow safe event, organizers say

Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon organizers canceled today’s marathon and 10-mile due to the latest weather conditions, which they said would be dangerous for runners.“The latest weather forecast update projects record-setting heat conditions that do not allow a safe event for runners, supporters and volunteers,” Twin Cities In Motion, the nonprofit that organizes the event, said in a statement early Sunday. The statement continued: “It saddens Twin Cities In Motion and our partners to be unable to hold the races that runners have been pointing toward for months, but the safety of participants and the community will always be our primary concern. Extreme heat conditions can tax both runners and our emergency medical response systems. We ask the entire running community to come together for the safety of everyone involved.”Sunday’s forecast is hot and humid with temperatures near 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, which said record...Multiple agencies searching for missing child in Saratoga County

After a decade-long and at times bitter struggle to convert 234 acres of mostly farmland in southern Westminster into a new community, the Uplands is finally turning dirt.“From the beginning, our vision was to create a model of sustainability and affordability, with plentiful missing middle housing. And above all, we were passionate about leading on water conservation, design innovation, and thoughtful placemaking,” said Jeff Handlin, president of Oread Capital & Development, during a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday afternoon. The “moderate” density community expects to provide 2,350 new housing units targeting middle-income buyers who are increasingly left on the sidelines in a housing market where the median price of a single-family home sold runs $650,000.Besides market-rate single-family homes, the master-planned community will include for-sale courtyard cottages, townhomes and duplexes better priced to meet the needs of first-time buyers, growing...EPA’s electric-lawnmower settlement with Suncor is “out of touch” with community needs, critics say
Published Mon, 25 Nov 2024 07:02:45 GMT
Environmentalists and public officials who monitor Suncor Energy’s oil refinery in Commerce City are fuming over a recent announcement that the company will contribute money toward a voucher program to help people buy electric lawnmowers after it sold dirty fuel at local gas stations. The Environmental Protection Agency announced the settlement with Suncor last month after the company reported it had sold gasoline with too much benzene in it. Suncor will pay a $160,000 penalty and contribute $600,000 to the Regional Air Quality Council’s Mow Down Pollution program, which provides vouchers to replace gas-powered lawn and garden equipment. It’s a meaningless fine for a company that earns billions of dollars in profit each year and the voucher program is out of touch with the real needs in the community, said Guadalupe Solis, director of environmental justice programs at Cultivando, a Latina-run nonprofit in Adams County that focuses on health equity and has monitored a...Warriors: 3 (and a half) things to watch in Golden State training camp and preseason
Published Mon, 25 Nov 2024 07:02:45 GMT
Warriors training camp begins Monday afternoon with plenty of questions to answer and players to keep an eye on. Golden State won’t have a title to defend this year, but the aging core of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green is looking to pry open the contention window for as long as possible. This year, that means swapping unpredictable youth for experience and IQ. The Jordan Poole-for-Chris Paul trade was a definitive end to a “two-timeline” youth movement that was interfering with the end game. A handful of players will need to buy into roles that are perhaps outside of their comfort zone to get the on-court and off-court symbiosis Golden State lacked last season. That starts at training camp, which leads into five preseason exhibition games — two against the Los Angeles Lakers, two against the Sacramento Kings and one against the San Antonio Spurs. Here are three-and-a-half things to keep an eye on when camp kicks off.1. Who plays best with Chris Pa...Here’s how to register that restored 1966 Corvette, or any other vehicle, in CA without the original title: Roadshow

Q: My career military brother, now deceased, brought his non-operative ‘66 Vette to his last assignment in California. It had been registered once, when he bought it in 1966, in Connecticut. I transferred ownership of the vehicle with no problem following his passing, as I had the required documentation to do so.After a complete restoration, I now want to register it. The CA DMV wants a title to complete the registration. I could not find the title among my brother’s records. The Connecticut DMV did not find a match for the car in their records. What do I need to do?Charles A. BerlsA: The DMV replied that customers who are missing supporting evidence of ownership can register a vehicle without the certificate of title, but to get a new certificate of title for the vehicle, you must submit a Motor Vehicle Ownership Surety Bond (REG 5057) form or a bond alternative. For more details, see: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2/bo...‘Mood is dark’: 80% of Bay Area voters see state of big three downtowns as serious problem, poll finds

Anthony Estrada hasn’t been to downtown San Francisco since he grabbed a beer after the St. Patrick’s Day parade and “a guy walks up and drops his pants” and, well, we don’t need to tell you what happened next. “It’s really not worth going there anymore.”Elle Dunn used to enjoy Oakland’s great restaurants and entertainment, but now considers its downtown “one of the scariest places on earth.”And San Jose? It’s not necessarily crime or homelessness keeping people away. It’s a different kind of demoralizing.“Honestly, I personally don’t know what downtown San Jose is about, even as a business owner,” said Liana Ryan, who owns a restaurant there. “We’re not a foodie place. We’re not a shopping place. We’re not a whatever. And after COVID, we’re desolate.”San Jose has its share of cultural offerings, such as the San Jose Museum of Art, but in a recent poll, most people said there were few reasons to visit downtown.
