Drop boxes have become key to election conspiracy theories. Two Democrats just fueled those claims

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 10:30:29 GMT

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A woman approaches a drop box in the dark with what appears to be handfuls of ballots. At a different drop box, someone else is seen making multiple trips to insert ballots. At yet another, the same car stops on at least three separate occasions, with different people stepping out and heading to the box. It’s not a trailer for the latest conspiracy movie about rigged elections. Instead, the video footage has become central to a real-world controversy over potential fraud involving ballot drop boxes, a favorite target of right-wing conspiracy theorists since former President Donald Trump’s loss in the 2020 election. The accusations of drop box fraud are not coming from those pushing fringe election claims or from skeptical Republicans who have long favored eliminating or severely restricting use of the boxes. They are being made by Democrats — two candidates vying for mayor in Connecticut’s largest city, in a heavily Democratic state that began allowing dro...

Zoom may be making you think you are ugly

(The Conversation) - The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in a new era of digital connection: In the absence of in-person gatherings, many people instead found themselves face-to-face with their co-workers and loved ones on a screen.Videoconferencing has provided many benefits and conveniences. However, it isn’t surprising that constantly seeing ourselves on screens might come with some downsides as well.Prior to the pandemic, studies showed that surgeons were seeing increasing numbers of patients requesting alterations of their image to match filtered or doctored photos from social media apps. Now, several years into the pandemic, surgeons are seeing a new boom of cosmetic surgical requests related to videoconferencing. In one study of cosmetic procedures during the pandemic, 86% of cosmetic surgeons reported videoconferencing as the most common reason for cosmetic concerns among their patients.Despite the fact that many aspects of life have returned to some version of...

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 10:30:29 GMT

Byron Buxton, who participated in live batting practice on Monday in Houston, was hoping to make the Twins’ decisions a little harder, but in the end, he will be cheering on his teammates again from the bench as the Twins embark on their next playoff series. There was only one change to the playoff roster, set Saturday morning ahead of Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Houston Astros at 3:45 p.m. at Minute Maid Park. The Twins added Bailey Ober, who will start on Saturday, and subtracted rookie reliever Kody Funderburk, keeping 14 position players and 12 pitchers.Because this series is longer — a best-of-five rather than a best-of-three — the Twins needed an additional starting pitcher. Christina Caron: The beauty of a silent walk

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 10:30:29 GMT

In a TikTok video that has now amassed nearly 500,000 views, influencer Mady Maio describes taking a walk. But not just any walk: a silent one.For her, the 30-minute stroll was revelatory. No podcasts, no music. Just “me, myself and I.”She was resistant at first. (It was her boyfriend’s idea.) “My anxiety could never,” she said in the video.Maio described the first two minutes as mental “mayhem” that eventually gave way to a “flow state.” Her brain fog lifted. Ideas started popping into her head because she was “giving them space to enter.”The silent walk is TikTok’s latest wellness obsession, a blend of meditation and exercise that aims to improve mental health. Unlike the similarly trendy “hot girl walk,” a four-mile odyssey that requires goal-setting and giving thanks, the silent walk does not involve multitasking. There is no agenda other than to set one foot in front of the other and take note of the world around you.Walking in silence is an ancient tradition rooted in mindfuln...

Kickin’ It with Kiz: Coach Prime is great, but are CU Buffs best college football team in the state?

Who would win a football game between the CU Buffs and Air Force Falcons? Does it matter? The local media would only care about what Deion Sanders’ celebrity guest list might look like on the CU sideline.MaGee, healthy cynicKiz: Coach Prime and the Buffs are the best story in college football. But the undefeated Air Force Falcons are the best college football team in the state. The Zoomies would ground and pound the Buffs to a pulp. Is there any way we could arrange a showdown at a bowl game? Zoomies 31, Buffs 27. My score. Sticking to it.I’ve always appreciated how you’re not afraid to point out when something stinks with the Broncos. I rarely read about the horrendous job general manager George Paton has done with this team. Cutting linebacker Randy Gregory and eating the cap hit seems to be in a long line of garbage moves by Paton, dating back to his time with Minnesota and his role in giving quarterback Kirk Cousins a horrific contract. Although Russell Wilson ...
