Soucheray: Instead of a pothole tax, let’s sell naming rights

Soucheray: Instead of a pothole tax, let’s sell naming rights We must admit, the worst pothole season in a generation, as it is being marketed by St. Paul City Hall for tax increase purposes, has produced some magnificent fissures, box canyons of no return, eruptions, explosive debris fields, jagged craters and eerie chambers so large they are marked with traffic cones. Why, you can see our streets from space! We’ve been here before, every winter and spring. Minnesotans know the science of the freeze-thaw cycle the way Californians know their atmospheric rivers — which have healed the drought — or Oklahomans know Tornado Alley. We have at least another month, maybe longer, before the longer-lasting warm weather treatments can be dumped into the holes and troweled smooth.Everybody seems to have their favorites. I am particularly fond of Fairview Avenue between Ford Parkway and Highland Parkway on the west side of the street. The destruction there is almost cinem...

One by one, your long-time colleagues have moved on, perhaps retired or relocated to other states. You may be keeping in touch on social media, but take a closer look at those posts: Anything about work in there? Hmm. The updates at this stage are more likely to be personal than professional. And my point is? You’re going to be in trouble if you haven’t been building new networks to replace the ones that evaporated with those last retirements. Otherwise, who will you call when layoffs loom or you need advice about a work issue? For late bloomers and others who want to keep working to a late age — including those whose fi...
