BERKELEY — By the close of training camp, college football players are itching to take the field in an actual game. It can feel like forever since the last one.Few players in the country have had a longer wait than Cal defensive lineman Brett Johnson.“It’s been a long time,” he said this week.In fact, when the Bears open their season on Sept. 2 at North Texas, it will have been 1,001 days since Johnson played in a game. He missed the entire 2021 season after fracturing his hip in a car accident that spring, and when he tore his ACL during camp a year ago, his 2022 season also was scrubbed.Named a third-team freshman All-American by Pro Football Focus way back in 2019, Johnson hasn’t faced an opponent since Dec. 5, 2020, when the Bears closed out their COVID-shortened season with a 21-17 win over Oregon.Asked if he can even remember that day, Johnson said, “Of course. That was a great game.”Football folks also have a long memory as evidenced by the fact that Johnson was named Wednesd...Jill On Money: Summer Mail Bag — Estate

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Simone Biles is not going to explain herself. Part of this is by design. Part of this is because she simply can't.When the gymnastics star is at her best, as she was on Sunday night while winning her record eighth U.S. championship, she feels like she's in a “fever dream.” It's not autopilot exactly. It's more of a vibe. A flow. It's in those moments that the doubts that still plague her almost daily even now, a decade into a run of unprecedented excellence, fade away. There is no thinking. No overanalyzing. No “ twisties.” All of it recedes into the background. Her coach Laurent Landi calls it a skill. Biles, even at 26, won't go that far. Maybe because she simply doesn't want to.She spent a long time, far too long, getting caught up in her head. She's intent on not doing it this around. So yeah, she was smiling midway through a floor routine that made almost every other competitor on the floor stop what they were doing to watch and drew a standing ovation...Google Flights presenta tres funciones para ayudar a los viajeros a ahorrar dinero y revela los lugares más buscados para las vacaciones

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida asked China on Monday to urge its citizens to halt acts of harassment, including crank calls and stone throwing at Japanese diplomatic facilities and schools, in response to Japan’s release of treated radioactive wastewater from the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant.“I must say it is regrettable,” Kishida said. He said Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Masataka Okano summoned China’s ambassador, Wu Jianghao, to ask that Chinese people act calmly and responsibly. The release of the treated wastewater into the ocean, which began Thursday and is expected to continue for decades, has been strongly opposed by fishing groups and by neighboring countries. China immediately banned all imports of Japanese seafood in response. In South Korea, thousands of people joined rallies over the weekend to condemn the discharge.Acts of harassment including crank phone calls and stone throwing have targeted Japan’s embassy and consu...March 4 trial date set for Trump in federal case charging him with plotting to overturn election

WASHINGTON (AP) — A judge has set a March 4 trial date for Donald Trump in the federal case in Washington charging the former president with trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The decision from U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan denied a defense request to push the trial back until April 2026, about a year and a half after the 2024 election, but also sets it later than the January date proposed by special counsel Jack Smith’s team.Chutkan made it clear to both sides at the outset of Monday’s status conference that she considered neither proposal acceptable.“These proposals are obviously very far apart,” she said. “Neither of them is acceptable.”Trump, a Republican, was charged earlier this month in a four-count indictment with scheming to undo his loss to Joe Biden, a Democrat, in the 2020 election. The federal election subversion prosecution is one of four criminal cases against Trump. Smith’s team has brought a separate federal case accusing him of illegally r...Latest news
