FDA panel OKs over-the-counter birth control pill

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 03:15:25 GMT

By Matthew Perrone | Associated PressWASHINGTON — Federal health advisers said Wednesday that a decades-old birth control pill should be sold without a prescription, paving the way for a likely U.S. approval of the first over-the-counter contraceptive medication. The panel of FDA advisers voted unanimously in favor of drugmaker Perrigo’s request to sell its once-a-day medication on store shelves alongside eye drops and allergy pills. The recommendation came at the close of a two-day meeting focused on whether women could safely and effectively take the pill without professional supervision. A final FDA decision is expected this summer. If the agency follows the nonbinding recommendation, Perrigo’s drug, Opill, would become the first contraceptive pill to be moved out from behind the pharmacy counter. The company said sales could begin late this year if OK’d.The outside experts said they were mostly confident that women of all ages could use the drug appropriately wit...

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 03:15:25 GMT

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) -- Is the school year completely over for Oakland public school students? More than 34,000 students and their parents are left in limbo as the teachers' strike stretched into Day 5 Wednesday. There's only 11 school days left in the 2022-2023 academic year.A stalemate between the Oakland Unified School District and the Oakland Education Association teachers union appeared to deepen on Wednesday when the district's school board cancelled its regular board meeting. According to the union, the cancelation underscored the district's leadership failures.Thousands of teachers will not return to their classrooms until a new contract agreement is reached that includes "common good" proposals, the union said.OUSD has kept its schools "open" throughout the strike, but most students chose to stay home rather than cross picket lines. VALHALLA, N.Y. As he spoke, negotiators from the White House and Congress met for two hours privately at the Capitol to discuss a path forward.“America is the strongest economy in the world, but we should be cutting spending and lowering the deficit without a needless crisis,” Biden said Wednesday. His words were a challenge to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who met Tuesday with Biden at the White House, declaring afterward that sharp spending cuts were required for House Republicans t...
