Su Teatro’s “Wolf at the Door” a grim and gratifying fable | Review It was the evening of last weekend’s solar eclipse and a full moon hung above the set of “Wolf at the Door,” at Su Teatro Arts and Culture Center. On stage, in a modest hacienda, two women prepare for the arrival of a baby. It is a chilly night in 1800s Mexico. Between her intermittent moans, a pregnant Isadora (Paola Miranda) paces the room, hoping to ease her contractions. Her Rocio (Magally Luna), once her nanny and now her housekeeper, makes preparations. The two talk with hope about the baby and Isadora’s family’s impending visit. They speak less enthusiastically about Isadora’s husband, Séptimo (Camilo Luera). He hits his wife, even when she is pregnant. When the baby arrives early and stillborn, the fault for the heartbreak is his. While Isadora is still holding the swaddled infant, Séptimo comes through the door and proves just what kind of man he is. When Rocio tells him the child was a boy, he quips at Isadora, “At least you got that right.” Then adds with disgust, “bu...

Garfield County leaders tell library to keep “pornographic materials” away from kids in latest salvo over Japanese graphic novels

Garfield County leaders tell library to keep “pornographic materials” away from kids in latest salvo over Japanese graphic novels Garfield County’s elected commissioners this week directed the county’s library board to ensure “pornographic materials” aren’t accessible to children at public libraries and can’t be checked out by young people. How the commissioners would enforce that order — the latest flare-up in a fight over library materials in the Western Slope county — and how the county even defines pornography were unclear when the board voted unanimously to approve the message Monday.Commissioner Tom Jankovsky acknowledged in an interview with The Denver Post on Wednesday that the Garfield County Public Library District’s Board of Trustees is an independent body that doesn’t have to follow the county’s directive. But, he said, “the reason that motion was made is because we do have the ability to remove all board members from the library board.”The commissioners “don’t want to go there,” Jankovsky said, but it is...

Music mega-stars Drake, Beyoncé, Harry Styles and more continue to snub Denver

Music mega-stars Drake, Beyoncé, Harry Styles and more continue to snub Denver If you’re a fan of Beyoncé, Drake, Adele, Harry Styles, Janet Jackson, Metallica, The Chicks, Pearl Jam, or Billy Joel, you have no choice but to leave Colorado for their current run of shows. Why is that? Especially when Colorado is getting concerts from undisputed heavyweights such as Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Madonna, Zac Brown Band, Olivia Rodrigo, Foo Fighters and Morgan Wallen?Fans and critics have posed the question often. U2 hasn’t played Colorado since 2015, skipping us with its last couple of tours despite previously playing here regularly. As a colleague of mine pointed out, they used to love us, having filmed “Under a Blood Red Sky” (at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in 1983) and part of “Rattle & Hum” (at McNichols Sports Arena in 1987) in Colorado.Drake performs at the Pepsi Center in Denver on Oct. 2, 2016. (Seth McConnell, The Denver Post)How ridiculous is it that Drake and 21 Savage, three days before their Sept. 8 show at Ball Arena, ...

DPS pushes back as city officials, including Mayor Johnston, seek to influence policy, board elections

DPS pushes back as city officials, including Mayor Johnston, seek to influence policy, board elections Despite an anodyne name, the dormant City-School Coordinating Committee that Denver city officials are seeking to revive has become a flashpoint in a seeming power struggle with leaders of Denver Public Schools. The intent of the committee is simple enough, as city officials want to establish a formal channel for regular discussion of safety challenges and other school issues of public concern. But debate that played out in public Wednesday between district officials and City Council members — including over who will serve on the new panel and how it will operate — underlined potentially higher stakes, especially as Mayor Mike Johnston this week took sides in the contentious fall DPS board elections.Johnston previously referred to the fractious school board as “a public embarrassment” during this year’s mayoral campaign. He called for change Tuesday when he endorsed a trio of reform-minded candidates backed by Educate Denver, a civic group that also supp...

Colorado hardly regulates funeral homes and crematories. That could soon change.

Colorado hardly regulates funeral homes and crematories. That could soon change. When Colorado state Sen. Dylan Roberts first heard details about the Return to Nature Funeral Home in Penrose, he expressed profound disappointment.“I can’t believe Colorado is going through this again,” the Avon Democrat said. “Why is this continuing to happen in our state? It doesn’t seem to happen in most other states.”The situation was gruesome: Authorities found at least 189 improperly stored bodies in the funeral home specializing in green burial, an operation its owners had been running without a license. State regulators seemed to have no idea. The grisly news from the southern Colorado mortuary shined a spotlight on the state’s lax oversight of funeral homes and crematories. Colorado remains the only state in the country that doesn’t license funeral directors or require some certification. State officials don’t regularly inspect funeral homes and only devote one-quarter of one full-time position to regulate 220 funeral ho...
