Live updates | Mostly good scores early at challenging par-3 17th at British Open

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:14:50 GMT

SO FAR SO GOOD FOR MOST PLAYERS AT 17TH HOLEHOYLAKE, England (AP) — The much-hyped par-3 17th hole was producing more good scores than bad through the opening round of the British Open. The 136-yard hole at Royal Liverpool was redesigned to add drama to the tournament this year, challenging players with an elevated green well protected by steep slopes and deep bunkers. There were seven birdies and only one score of double bogey or worse at the hole early in the opening round. Lucas Herbert had a triple bogey, with his troubles starting after his tee shot went into the rough to left of the green. He found the deep right-side bunker from there and needed two shots to get out before two-putting.The wind wasn’t blowing too hard, making it easier for players.Bryson DeChambeau and Wyndham Clark were among the players who challenged the internal out-of-bounds boundary that cuts into the fairway at the third hole, with both hitting shots that went well left — away from the out-of-bounds troub...

A new cricket league is underway in the busy US sports market. Organizers believe it can stick

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:14:50 GMT

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (AP) — “Deep in the Heart of Texas” blared from the speakers during a timeout a few days into the debut of a U.S. professional cricket league near Dallas.Fans waved the flags of the Texas Super Kings and the LA Knight Riders, with some wearing the jerseys of their favorite countries or clubs overseas. A couple had ballcaps of two of the biggest brands in the United States — the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys and Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees. This unusual confluence comes during the debut of Major League Cricket, which is hoping to find a foothold for one of the world’s most popular sports in a sports-mad country that knows little about the “other” bat-and-ball game.Because of a willing partner happy to see a fading minor league baseball stadium turned into one of the few legitimate cricket pitches in the country, the league made its start in Texas, famous for the Friday night lights of high school football. The 7,000-seat stadium is in Grand P...

American Airlines rides travel boom to $1.3 billion profit in the second quarter as fuel prices drop

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:14:50 GMT

DALLAS (AP) — American Airlines is reporting a $1.34 billion profit for the second quarter, boosted by strong ticket sales and a huge drop in the price of jet fuel and the airline raised its profit expectations for the year.Revenue rose 5% to a quarterly record of $14.06 billion. International travel in particular is picking up, and that is helping American, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines. Thanks to lower fuel prices, the carrier’s spending at the pump plunged 32%, saving the American about $1.3 billion compared with a year earlier. That was partly offset, however, by labor costs that are rising and will soon increase much more rapidly. American recently agreed with union negotiators on a new labor contract that would raise pilot pay by more than 41% over four years. The two sides are now renegotiating after pilots at United got a better deal. The Allied Pilots Association, which represents crews at American, valued the previous deal at $8.3 billion over four years, and im...
